How Ayurveda can help in post-cancer care: Effective Ayurvedic treatments

Ayurveda Post Cancer Care

“If Cancer is termed a lifestyle disease which mostly happened due to the fast-paced modern lifestyle and food habits that went from being a disease that affects 10% of the population to a major worry that is affecting lives of many across demographics and defying age brackets over the period, it would not be an exaggeration.” as quoted by Dr. Robin Jacob, Our Chief Physician. Ayurveda and Western medicine differ from each other due to their approach towards diseases and treatment practices. Western medicine has an intrusive approach when it comes to the treatment of any type of disease, whereas Ayurveda addresses the root cause of the disease before diving into preparing any detailed treatment plan. Ayurveda is based on the concept of self-healing. “Our body has the ability to self-heal and Ayurveda Therapy in Kerala is all about treatment plans based on each body type which help stimulate and assist the body to get prepared to heal itself.” – Dr. Robin Jacob, Our Chief Physician says.

Cancer treatment involves very aggressive treatments like chemotherapy which in turn leaves the body weak from within due to the toxic side effects caused by the drugs used in treatments. Ayurvedic Cancer treatment in Kerala includes intake of herbal concoctions and external treatments with appropriate herb-induced oils that help purify the cells and support the body in recovering and self-healing. Cancer is a disease that takes a toll on one’s health immensely, affects the mental health of the person as well as the family members in question. According to Ayurveda, overall well-being can only be attained if the mind, body, and spirit of a person are perfectly balanced. Hence meditation and Yoga are of utmost importance while undergoing Ayurveda Therapy in Kerala.

An effective Ayurveda treatment for cancer is identifying the root cause of the illness. The approach Ayurvedic treatment has towards the disease can be divided into four.

  • The first stage is trying to maintain the health of an individual / Prakrithisthapani Chikitsa.
  • As the second stage, the treatment is aimed at assisting the body in bringing itself to restore its normal functions / Rasayana Chikitsa.
  • Once the body starts restoring its health, the damaged cells and tissues will regain their health and result in curing the disease / Roganashini Chikitsa.
  •  Last but not the least, the Ayurvedic approach to healing gives as much importance to physical well being as that of mental health by means of the spiritual approach / Naishthiki Chikitsa.

The herbal decoctions used in effective Ayurveda treatment for cancer have proven effects on various biochemical pathways which in turn supports various organs. The nourishing properties of these herbs will work together on various organs and help enhance the body’s defense system. Thus it stimulates tissues and cells in such a manner that helps reduce treatment-induced side effects, complications that arise due to cancer and assists the body towards total healing.

For an individual seeking a post-cancer cure with Ayurveda, the doctor will analyze one’s condition and medical history and assess the doshas along with mental condition before finalizing on the treatment plans. The patient needs to be in acceptance of their own health condition that can help them in making decisions regarding the treatment plans and tune their mind to be positive while embarking on the journey towards recovery and rejuvenation with our Ayurveda wellness center. The initial aim will be to restore and maintain the person’s health and overall well-being says Dr. Jobin J Madukkakuzhy, Medical Director Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda.

Treatment Plans

  1. Detoxification

Side effects due to medicinally induced toxins are the most common issue faced by people undergoing Allopathic cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is the process by which chemo drugs are used to destroy the cancer cells which grow faster than the other healthy cells. In the process, chances are high that a marginal amount of healthy cells too get damaged.

An effective Ayurveda treatment for cancer needs to address the residual toxins left by the chemo drugs before moving on to planning health restoration procedures. Hence different methods of detoxification are included in the initial stage of treatment.

Basti / Medicated Enema: Herbal decoctions or medicated oil are administered through the rectum to invoke bowel actions. Moreover, lipid-soluble elements in the medicines will be absorbed by the body which ensures cell rejuvenation.

Virechana / Purgation: Virechana Karma involves an intake of herbal decoctions that can induce bowel movements which helps eliminate toxins from the body.

Along with detoxification, patients have also advised a controlled intake of other herbs that have proven ability to cleanse the blood and are also immunity boosters including Amla, Ashwagandha, Garlic, Ginger, Tulsi, and turmeric.

  1. Massage

Massage therapy plays an integral role in managing pain, nausea, depression, stress, and anxiety. Abhyanga (herbal oil massage) is an entire body massage performed by using warm herbal oil depending on the specific dosha imbalance. Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic healing technique involving pouring of any liquid which can be oil/ medicated buttermilk / medicated milk over the forehead in a gentle flow.

“As important as external and internal treatments are while addressing the disease is a calm and relaxed mind to achieve the recovery that we are aiming for,” says Dr. Jobin J Madukkakuzhy, Medical Director Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda.

  1. Yoga

Side effects often displayed by patients undergoing cancer therapy are fatigue and lowered range of bodily motions. Yoga is proven to improve the range of motion of one’s body and help the body combat fatigue and improve functional well-being. The Yoga practices at our Ayurveda wellness center are designed to keep their focus on postures that can help relax and restore the body.

  1. Marjariasana (cat/cow pose)
  2. Shalabasana (locust pose)
  3. Vasisthasana
  4. Paschimottanasana
  5. Halasana

Are a few yoga poses that help energizes cancer patients?

Other yogasanas like Surya Namaskar and Himalaya Pranam when done slowly, and in a gentle manner are very effective for post-cancer care.

  1. Meditation / Relaxation

A guided seated meditation is very helpful to focus on breathing and being mindful. It helps reduce fatigue, depression, anxiety, and other cancer-related symptoms.
