Everything You Need To Know About Ayurvedic Treatment for Geriatric Care

Ayurveda Treatment for Geriatric Care

Ayurveda treatments such as Rasayana, Panchkarma and Yoga combined with other lifestyle changes have a key role to play in geriatric healthcare.

“Ageing is natural. Living longer isn’t great, but living healthy is”

“As a part of rejuvenation therapy in Ayurveda, proper identification of body type and health status is done and on this basis, we will design a diet and lifestyle to maintain the health. Therapy included are Abhyanga- Shirodhara- Pizhichil- Njavarakizhi etc”, says Dr Jobin J Madukkakuzhy, our Ayurveda Physician & Medical Director.

With age, the prevalence of illnesses also increases. Even the risk of severe illnesses like COVID-19 increases with age. Failure to maintain a healthy lifestyle leads to many health concerns, which become more common as people get older. Digestive diseases, aches, joint pain, and muscular pain are common among the elderly. Mental health issues such as depression and memory loss are also quite common with old age. Health care of elderly people requires support from expert doctors.

With our wisdom in geriatric care treatment, our practitioners can treat the post-COVID symptoms in the elderly. At Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda, our geriatric ayurvedic specialists can support the entire family to manage the hurdles of caring for their senior loved ones with proper treatments and attention. With its rejuvenating and restorative treatments, Ayurveda has the magic to prevent diseases. Rasayana, the Ayurveda branch primarily deals with geriatric problems. Rasayana or Jarachikitsa refers to the qualitative and quantitative improvement of dhatu (tissues). Rasayana becomes more effective if combined with panchakarma and better lifestyle changes.

Combating the ageing process is no longer difficult, as effective geriatric care Ayurveda treatments are available for the elderly to improve their quality of life and remain self-dependent and perform their daily activities independently.

Our Geriatric Care Treatments

Based on Ayurvedic lifestyle management, Rasayana Therapy and Yoga practices, we focus on developing safe and cost-effective geriatric care treatments.

Abhyanga

This Ayurvedic oil massage can be done either by our experienced massage therapists or you can do a self-massage. With this massage treatment, we support you to get rid of the three doshas that impact your general health such as – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We use aromatic oil, sesame oil or other effective oils, depending upon the dosha that needs to be balanced.

This massage technique provides diverse benefits such as

  • improves blood circulation throughout the body
  • increases strength and elasticity of joints and muscles
  • encourages youthfulness
  • boosts immunity
  • reduces stress and
  • improves skin and hair quality
  • reduces the visible signs of ageing

Padabhyanga

This mild oil foot massage treatment is done at our centre using heated herb-infused oil. The nerve endings in the foot have specific points that connect to various body organs and applying pressure at these points relieves the body of its ailments. Gentle massaging of the foot and soles by hands calms the nerves and blood vessels that are stressed. By producing more oxytocins, also ensures nerve health, strengthens the immune system, and controls the condition of diabetic neuropathy. We perform hand techniques to generate a rejuvenating experience, kasa bowl massage to eliminate toxins from the body or marma therapy to contribute to good health and well-being.

Nasyam

This detoxification therapy is performed by administering herbal oils through nostrils. Our practitioners provide this treatment not only to treat headaches and migraines but also to clear sinus congestion and remove toxins from the head and neck. Nasyam therapy is of different types – Pradhamana nasyam for kapha disorders, Brumhana nasyam to cure vata disorders, Shamana nasyam for pitta-type disorders, Navana nasyam for treating kapha-pitta and vata-pitta disorders, and Marshya nasyam to treat uneasiness due to disease.

Besides Rasayana, our geriatric care services also focus on providing constipation treatment, and we can take care of any chronic and refractory disease conditions.

Other lifestyle changes we recommend include :

  • Smoking cessation
  • Exercise
  • Yoga
  • Good nutrition

More than just an exercise, Yoga has the power to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit. Yogasanas can improve flexibility and range of movement, and offers both physical and mental health benefits. It can also improve your societal comfort.

Our Medical Director Dr. Jobin J Madukkakuzhy, says “Ayurvedic way of living is by structuring the life with proper diet and regimen which balance the physical mental and spiritual health of a person. Therapies like Udwarthana (powder massage), Abhyanga (traditional ayurvedic massage) help to balance the imbalance in the fat metabolism. Yoga plays a major role in balancing the body-hormone rhythm.”
