Are you suffering from Psoriasis, a skin-related auto-immune disorder that results in bumpy red patches covered with white scales on the skin? Then at the earliest you might need to consider Psoriasis treatment by Ayurveda. This is because unlike other treatment procedures that focus just on symptom management, Ayurveda for psoriasis intends to address and treat the disease’s actual root cause.
According to the Chief Physician & Head of yoga department Dr. Robin Jacob at Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda, “Comprehensive Ayurveda Medicine by its holistic approach of Panchakarma, palliative medicines, disease specific Rasayana (Immune modulators), dietary and lifestyle recommendations can help to manage the health issues.”
Before jumping onto the detailed Ayurveda psoriasis treatment methods, lets just take a peek into what exactly is this disease:
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin-related auto-immune disorder that affects the skin, causing the excessive and rapid growth of skin cells, that is 10 times faster than the normal growth, and leads to the formation of red, thick, scaly patches called plaques.
Although these plaques can grow anywhere, they mostly appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. One important thing to note is that, this skin condition is non-infectious as it can’t be passed from one person to another, but genetics play a role as it can happen in members of the same family.
Psoriasis and Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis occurs due to an imbalance of areas of energy or two “Doshas”- VataDosha and KaphaDosha. VataDosha is responsible for controlling bodily functions causing dryness and skin scaling of Psoriasis whereas the increase in KaphaDosha leads to any skin disease. Also, in Ayurveda, psoriasis is correlated with the ‘Kitibha’ and considered as one of the common varieties of eleven Ksudrakushta.
According to Ayurveda, there are various causative factors for Psoriasis such as disturbed and stressed lifestyle, bad eating habits (such as prolonged intake of aquatic animals, excess intake of green leafy vegetables along with milk, excess intake of food irrespective of hunger and so on), Viruddha Ahara (that is eating wrong combination of food), and the accumulation of physical and mental toxicity.
However, the psoriasis treatment in line of Ayurveda treatment includes stress control and medication. Since stress can play a major role in flaring up the psoriasis, Ayurveda works by lowering anxiety, blood pressures and cholesterol. Some of these results may be a bi-product of transcendental meditation, while others may come through the use of herbs or diet. Oral administration of medicated ghee, Vamana (Emesis- purgation can also be carried according to the condition) and various other single drugs such as Neem, Khadira, Sariva, Manjishtha, Chandana, Raktachandana, Guduchi, Patola, Yashtimadhu, Haridra, Daruharidra and Indian gooseberry are also included in the treatment plan.
The treatment plan will also include intake of blood purifiers (such as Neem Capsules and natural powders like Rishthas in traditional medications) to lessen the present toxins inside the body. Along with these treatment methods, Psoriasis Treatment in Ayurveda detoxifies the body with Panchakarma Therapies like Abhyangam, Virechana, Vasti, Raktamokshana.
Psoriasis scalp treatment in Ayurveda mainly includes Ghritapana, Shamana Aushadha and Vamana. While Ghritapana is oral administration of medicated herbal ghee, Vamana includes procedures to flush out toxins from one’s body.
Normally the Ayurveda treatment for psoriasis is finalized by analyzing the doshas because the ultimate goal of treating the psoriasis’s root cause is to restore one’s “natural dosha balance”. For instance, patients suffering from Psoriasis dominated by Vata dosha (where the patient will be experiencing excessive dryness and flaking) is administered with medicated ghee internally. Those suffering from Psoriasis dominated by Pitta imbalance are given Virechan- emetic therapy (which focuses on detoxification of liver) and those suffering from Psoriasis with more vitiated doshas are given Shodhana therapies several times with a lot of care.
Most important thing one should follow along with their Psoriasis Ayurveda Treatment is to adopt positive and healthy lifestyle changes which could be very beneficial for psoriasis. An unhealthy lifestyle and irregular or unhealthy diet intake release toxins in the body that may lead to toxins collection in the body, which would affect the skin cells and cause skin scaling.
